Hiring the Right Lighting Designer

Lighting is an essential element for videographers at weddings to sporting events for broadcast networks. It’s an art and a highly specialized field that requires extensive knowledge of how light works in different environments to the properties of the film being used. Hiring the right lighting director requires some research.

It may seem like a minor consideration, but choosing a lighting director familiar with LED lighting systems should be a priority. LED lighting is brighter, yet offers a softer illumination that will enhance the appearance of the subjects. Another benefit is that LED lights don’t produce as much heat as old-fashioned methods so people stay more comfortable and LED lights use less power, making them environmentally friendly.

A lighting professional will have the equipment needed to reflect light into dimly lit areas for a uniform appearance that prevents unwanted shadows and dark spots. The right illumination is essential for filming and it also ensures that still photos are perfect memory-makers or appropriate for promotional purposes.

A lighting designer shouldn’t be confused with the services of other electrical professionals. A lighting designer views environments with the eye of an artist and combines that with a variety of technical skills in multiple disciplines. They can provide spotlighting, colored illumination, strobes, lasers, and can time illumination to music and other cues. Lighting designers set moods, establish ambiance, and direct the focus of audiences or attendees.

The value, experience and knowledge the right lighting designer brings to any project will make the difference between a ho-hum event and one that’s an unmitigated success. A lighting designer understands the unique interplay of illumination in different environments and is experienced in lighting and filming techniques for occasions ranging from corporate events and professional films to sporting events and red carpet galas.

How Lighting Affects Actors

Lighting is an essential element for any performance whether it’s for a TV show, a blockbuster film, or a major theatre production. The illumination used affects an audience’s perception, but it also affects the actors and their performance. The award-winning company of Frank Gatto & Associates, Inc. has an in-depth understanding of that and views illumination as a “character” in its own right.

Perhaps the most obvious effect of lighting is the way it affects actors physically. Traditional lighting methods emit a significant amount of heat. It can be difficult for an actor to give their best performance when they’re overheated and uncomfortable. It takes a toll on their mental, physical and emotional ability to provide accurate portrayals.

Lighting is a major factor in every scene of a production. It provides ambiance and makes any given scene more “real” to the actors. The right lighting enables actors to lose themselves in the scene and give a performance that’s more personal and emotional to the audience.

Illumination techniques have the power to highlight an actor, pull them to the forefront of an audience’s notice, and provide more depth to their character. Lighting also provides clues for actors to say certain lines or change positions. The correct positioning and use of lighting techniques also affects an actor physically to soften features or create a harsh counterpoint. Illumination is a gateway to the imagination.

Unlike acting in the theatre where an actor obtains immediate feedback from the audience, TV and film actors must rely on their own abilities, scenery and lighting for their portrayals. Actors must convince their audience to suspend belief for the duration of the TV show or movie and lighting enables them to accomplish that through the creation of effects that helps them portray any emotion and appear more believable.

Light is the foundation upon which movie magic is made. Frank Gatto & Associates, Inc. is an innovator in the use of lighting and techniques. The company’s methods showcase actors to their best advantage, enabling them to tell their character’s story to the best of their ability without the draining heat of old-fashioned lighting strategies.

Starting A Career in Lighting

If you want to begin a career in lighting, you should consider becoming a Lighting Technician.  As a lighting tech, you will be called upon to work in the lighting department on a film, stage production or television broadcast. You will work alongside the lighting designer to ensure that their vision is brought to life by the correct positioning of the lighting equipment and the programming of the lighting system.

Your day to day duties will vary dramatically depending on exactly what you are working on, but they could include anything from interpreting the lighting plot, to ordering more light bulbs. You will also be required to work alongside other members of the backstage or production crew, so you will need to have good communication skills and be a team player.

To become a lighting technician, you may consider getting a degree or working your way up from an entry-level position, gaining skills in lighting on the job. You can find lighting technician jobs at concert venues, theater, film studios, and in television broadcast production companies. Lighting technicians also manage the lighting needs for special events, such as speeches, outdoor concerts, and large receptions. In any lighting tech role, you need to know the fundamentals of electricity and design concepts.

The Hands-On Route

There are different ways to become a lighting technician, and however you get there you will need to be dedicated to providing first-class lighting solutions, as well as being prepared to work unsociable hours on productions and be available at a moment’s notice.

One of the most common ways to move into the lighting industry without direct training is to utilize your skills and experience as an electrician and diversify into specializing in theatre or set lighting. You could also take a lighting technician course or apprenticeship.

It is also helpful if you have some experience of working in theaters or live music venues too.  While at university or college, you could try working on a student film project or join dramatic companies or drama societies, as gaining an understanding of lighting for the stage will give you a good grounding in the technical aspects of the job.

The Degree Qualification Route

Alternatively, you could study to obtain a degree in theatrical production arts or similar.  These types of courses will teach you more about programming lighting, the use of new technology and how to operate sophisticated lighting tools, as well as offering an introduction to architectural and theatrical lighting design.

As a lighting technician, you will need to not only understand how lighting works, but also be able to demonstrate high-level technical and creative skills in order to follow instructions that ensure the desired production lighting is achieved.  These skills will also be worked on when you undertake a course that is designed specifically for individuals who want to work on lighting within the creative industry, as opposed to within the residential or commercial sector.

Could You Be A Lighting Technician?

As a lighting tech you will get to work on some super cool stage and television events, including live studio records, music concerts, and even world-class sporting events, but you will need to be flexible and when and where you work and be able to work long hours in a physically demanding job.

Why Communication Is Key Between Client and Lighting Director

Hiring an experienced lighting director can bring a whole new dimension to your live show, corporate event or studio performance.  From the outset, they will bring their expertise to ensure that the lighting becomes an integral part of every performance. But, like every other member of your events team, they need to have a full understanding of what you are trying to achieve.  From the initial planning stages through to the main event, working in sync with your lighting director is key to making your event a success.

Whatever the occasion, keeping the lighting director on board at all times is crucial.  The expertise they bring to the table is worth so much more than just making sure the lighting looks good on the day.  Whether you are planning a live event, a studio production or are heading out on location, keeping your lighting director and his crew by your side will add value.  His crew will also be on hand to set up rigs, run cables and even help to ensure that your set is safe at all times.

Establish your lighting requirements

This is probably the most obvious reason to work alongside your lighting director.  He is the expert at knowing which types of lighting will work best for your event.  From spotlights to wall lights and everything in between, he knows it all.

Interpret your creative vision

Your script, your setlist or even your motivational speakers will all benefit from a full lighting plan that will enhance all aspects of their performance.  A professional lighting director will liaise with the producer and their team to understand their goal from the outset.

Creating a lighting plan

Great lighting techniques never happen by accident.  Every flash and pop of color is planned down the last second to ensure that the lighting runs in sequence with the action on stage or screen.

Assembling lights and planning locations

Again, you can’t just throw a load of lights on a stage and hope that they look awesome. Every can, rig and stand-alone needs to be mapped out to ensure that the light they create matches the atmosphere you are hoping to achieve.

Testing and safety

Lighting directors spend a long time ensuring that their crew always provide equipment that is in good working order and that can be relied upon to perform.  They will also be responsible for ensuring that everything is safe, down to tidying cables away and ensuring every switch is safe to use.

Building rigs

Large events call for a lot of lighting.  In many cases this also involves lighting being hung up high to illuminate to stage below or shine out onto the audience.  A professional lighting director will be able to plan a rig that his crew can assemble to ensure that every aspect of the action can always be seen.

Integrate with the rest of the crew

On large productions, the lighting director will have his team integrate with the rest of the crew to ensure that they are there when they are needed.

Become an integral part of the team

The lighting director will become as important as any other member of the team.  Where necessary, they will visit locations to assess the feasibility of lighting plans and work alongside the floor manager, producer and sound technicians throughout the course of the event or production.

Program light effects

Using complex and technologically advanced DMX consoles, the lighting director will be able to program entire lighting routines that will run throughout the course of the event.

Professional Lighting Rental for On the Road Productions

If you are taking your production out on the road, you will need to make sure that all of the equipment you use is compact enough to travel, yet still powerful enough to be effective.

When it comes to lighting for indoor or outdoor events, you can hire pretty much everything you need to ensure that your audience never misses a moment.  In order to be sure that your mobile production is always perfectly lit and absolutely awesome looking, you will need to hire the right equipment for the job

Rigging

The first thing you will need to set on your mobile stage, runway or podium will be the rigging that holds you lighting in place.  Lighting trees and pipework speaker stands are fully mobile and can be used with ease on the road.  To ensure that your lighting trees or pipes are always safe, you should add extra support by way of sandbags at the base of each tree to prevent them from tipping.

Dimming

You will need to be sure that you have enough power to operate all of your dimming packs.  Using a range of dimmer packs will allow you to have intensity control over your lights from a lighting console, allowing your lighting techs to create the affects you are looking for.

Because dimming packs run off of mains power, you will need to find out in advance where your nearest power source is.  You can then run the power to your lighting trees using extension cords, before taping them down to hold the cable secure and take the strain off the power connection.

Lights

The most important part of the whole lighting set up is, of course, the lights themselves.  When you are preparing a mobile lighting set up, you should still be able to produce professional lighting that is equally as impressive and effective as any major theatre or studio production.  Using a mixture of profiles and spotlights, fresnels, pars, floods and beam you can create magical moods and effects, no matter where you are performing.

Consoles and Cabling

Once you have hired all of the light trees, dimming packs and lighting equipment that you need to take your production on the road, you will then need to think about how you are going to control it all.  A DMX console will enable you to control the lighting, and make it dance to the music.  If you aren’t able to control the lights yourself, you can also hire a lighting technician to come on the road with you.

Professional Lighting Hire from Frank Gatto & Associates

Our experienced lighting team can provide you with everything thing you need to take your production out on the road. From cables and consoles through to complex lighting equipment and designs. We can even send our experience and highly efficient lighting technicians out on the road with you.  Call us today at 561-368-0101 to find out more.

Dress Your Set to Impress with LED Video Walls

These days, everyone is looking for the next big way to impress their audience, and set their own live production or studio event apart from the competition.  LED Video Walls are an impressive way to project the action on stage, or pre-recorded videos out to huge audiences while delivering the ultimate wow factor for anyone who sees it.

What are LED Video Walls?

LED video walls are made up of a number of Direct View LED displays that work together to produce a single display.  These LED screens work so well because each of them is responsible for conducting and emitting its own light.

The “light-emitting diodes” are tiny, two-lead semiconductor light sources, that can produce and emit their own light, making them long-lasting and incredibly durable. LED lights do not run hot or burn out as they are only illuminated by the movement of electrons in a semiconductor, and not a heat producing filament.

The LEDs used in video walls are also special because the displays can achieve “true black” because each screen is coated in black resin epoxy. Shades are then inserted in between the lights to separate the illuminations and eliminate reflectance.

The Benefits of Using an LED Video Wall

If you have space and the capacity to install an LED Video wall at your live music show, outdoor event or even indoor production, they can create the most amazing effects that are always truly memorable.

Lighting

LED Video walls are designed for high levels of illumination, making them perfect for night time events. They can also be displayed beautifully in a well-lit room or on a showroom floor, creating awesome effects for your business.

They are also able to handle ambient lighting far better than LCD can, and the runs on NIT, not Lux.

Reliability

LED Video walls are highly energy efficient and the light source they use is incredibly long-lasting, with a lifetime of at least 50,000 hours.  They also offer the very best refresh ranges of any video wall on the market, meaning they will always look crisp, clean and totally in synch with their surroundings.

Seamless Installation

LED panels have minimal bezels (seams) and can be tiled together to create a display that is totally tailor-made to fit the space it is needed for.  They also offer lower pixel density and wider viewing angles and can show any size or shape, not just 16:9.

High-Quality Pictures

Because LED video walls can achieve true black using epoxy coated LEDs and offer a wide color gamut, you can create the perfect picture for your entire audience to enjoy.

Use an LED Video Wall to Really Set the Scene

Whether you want to simply display your logo, a promotional short, or something unique to your brand, an LED wall is far more dynamic than just a plain old backdrop.

The same applies to live music events, fashion shows, parties and other big events, as only LED video walls have the sheer display quality, ease of use and affordability to create such dynamic effects across a wide range of applications.

The Top Jobs in Film and Television Behind the Camera

Ask anyone who’s worked in film and TV and they’ll tell you the real talent is behind the camera! Sure, the actors dish out the charm, looks and words but they would be nothing without an army of talented, highly-skilled individuals working feverishly in the background to produce a polished final production ready for the audience to enjoy.

If you’ve ever sat through the end credits of a show and wondered just what some of those strange job titles actually mean, the read on and we’ll give you a little inside knowledge…

The Gaffer

Every movie set requires electricity to function and a gaffer is the person responsible for everything to do with this. He or she will be fully responsible for making sure there is power on set, from making sure all the plugs are pushed in and flicked on to ensuring everything is safe and up and running before the talent arrives on set. If you’ve ever seen a movie set and noticed the amount of lighting and other powered devices, the gaffer is the person who feverishly makes sure all this works.   All hail the gaffer!

The Best Boy

It may be a strange job title, the best boy is the person who works directly under the gaffer, ensuring all their commands are carried out. In other words, the gaffer shoulders the responsibility whilst the best boy does the actual work!  If you need something electrical sorted on a set, chances are it’s the best boy you’ll deal with rather than their boss.

The Dolly Grip

Ever seen those little train tracks on movie sets? Those are dolly tracks. They usually carry a little platform with a camera crew on it, allowing a smooth transition of bulky camera equipment, delivering a seamless, smooth shot. A dolly grip is a much-loved individual who has to lay these tracks and push the dolly camera platform along. Often found between takes massaging their lower back while making “Oooh!” faces.

The Line Producer

A line producer is a mystery to anybody not actually involved in that day’s shoot. To those on set, however, the line producer is mother and father all rolled into one. They are the person responsible for handling all the logistics and running of the set on a day to day basis. They work tirelessly to ensure every element of the shoot is ready to go when needed, from camera operators and props, through to making sure that the cast is ready to be in their places when the director calls “Action”.

The Foley Artist

Most people don’t realize that movie sets are incredibly noisy. A studio set or an outdoor location has so much background noise that sensitive microphones and cameras can pick it all up, leaving most of the audio recorded on the day rendered useless. This is where the foley team steps in. They replicate the sounds needed, from walking on gravel and opening doors right through to all the squelchy sound effects used in horror films. They can be found doing these using ingenious methods, usually involving vegetables and hammers, and, once added to the film, it all gives a seamless extra layer of sensory enjoyment.

The Lighting Technician

Remember at the beginning we looked at a gaffer? Well, working closely under that person is the all-important Lighting Technician. This talented person is responsible for maintaining and utilizing the myriad of lights required to bathe a set in brightness (or gloom) to meet the Director’s requirements. Whether the need is for a gloriously sunny day or a moody, atmospheric night shoot, you can bet your last penny it’s all achieved through the use of lighting. The techs work under the watchful eye of the Lighting Director and are responsible for positioning the lights, making sure they stay working and all other aspects of illumination.  Without these unsung heroes, you might as well be making a radio show!
