Use Light To Create The Perfect Ambiance

Whether you are at home, in the office or out on the tiles, the right lighting adds ambiance to any atmosphere.  A nightclub would be boring without pulsing strobe lights, and your bedroom would feel cold and empty without soft lighting on your nightstand.

The right lighting can enhance the look and feel of any space.  In this blog, we look at how to make every room perfect using lighting tips and tricks from us, the experts in event lighting.   Light up your home with a complete makeover or invest in a few extra lamps to add interest.

Living Areas

Spaces that are multipurpose, like lounge rooms or reception areas, often serve different purposes throughout the day.  A bright, spacious lounge works well during the daylight hours but can be transformed with soft, ambient lighting come nightfall.

A successful lighting design combines a number of light sources at different levels, that can be used at different times of the day or night.  A chandelier makes a stunning focal point and can be used when you need a high level of illuminations, whereas side lamps add a subtle and cozy feel for long dark evenings.

Kitchens

Most kitchens benefit from a higher level of lighting when they are in use.  Low energy spotlights are perfect for modern kitchens, and additional under counter lighting or an illuminated extractor hood help you to see when you are cooking.  If you want to add a “wow” factor to your kitchen, invest in a feature light to complement your low-level lighting.  A chandelier, a drum shade or a contemporary pendant can become an amazing centerpiece for the heart of your home.

Bedrooms

Soft lighting creates a relaxing and serene ambiance, helping to ease you into a great nights sleep.  That said, there may be times when you want your bedroom well lit to assist so you can see everything in better detail.  Wardrobe lighting, dresser lighting and a selection of side lamps allow you to adjust the level of lighting you need at any time. If you read in bed, your reading lamp should be powerful enough to enable you to read comfortably without having to squint. Soft lighting is perfect for bedtime, but no light is better for sleeping.  Whatever kind of bedroom lighting you choose, be sure to switch them all off when your head finally hits the pillow.

Office Spaces

If you work in a big office, you may not be able to avoid the cold, hard fluorescent bulbs overhead.  But if you have a choice or work from home, try and create a lighting environment that is not harsh, but also not too dim.  Computers emit their own distinctive light, and in order for you to be able to work without straining your eyes, you need to combat the glow. Natural daylight is the very best lighting for an office environment, but if you have small windows or need to work at night, find a lamp or bulb that gives off a natural level of light.

Bathrooms

You may think that you don’t have a lot of choices when it comes to bathroom lighting.  Sure enough, you do need to make sure that the lights you fit can withstand steam, damp and heat,  but you can still completely change the feel of a bathroom with clever lighting.  Candles around the tub is a relaxing and romantic gesture, but not always practical.

Wall mounted sconces, vanity lighting and shower lighting can all add interest to your bathroom, and using frosted or white bulbs can help to reduce glare. Incandescent lighting is always best in the bathroom, as it gives a soft, warm daylight glow.

Plan Your Perfect Event

A soccer game, a boxing match, a fundraiser or even a wedding, all big occasions need to happen seamlessly in order to be enjoyed.  And to do that successfully, you need to ensure that everything is perfectly planned beforehand.

Here at Frank Gatto & Associates, we have worked with many of the major players in sporting and entertainment events. But we are not so big that we don’t remember what it feels like to walk the red carpet on prom night or pick up a medal at your high school soccer tournament.  That is why we want to ensure that whatever the occasion, your special event is well planned and absolutely perfect for the night.

If you are planning a big event, here are our top tips on how to plan everything you need to think about in advance.

Your Venue

The right venue is key when it comes to the success of your big events. Are you looking to hold a formal, seated, indoor event or something more active or sports-based that will need to be held outside?  From the school football field or sports track, to garden weddings or sit down dinners, the venue needs to match the requirements of the event.

You will need a venue that can safely hold the number of people you are expecting to attend, will offer suitable bathroom and catering facilities if required.  You will also need to ensure that your venue is safe and meets all local regulations in respect of fire safety and other important ordinances.

Sound System

If you are planning on having hundreds of people turn up to your party or event, simply playing a few tunes on your home speakers really won’t be enough to get everyone on their feet.  You can hire home PA systems from most audio companies who will be able to advise you on the best size speakers and equipment for you.  If you are having an outdoor event, or large-scale indoor affair, you should include microphones in the mix to compere your event, and advise guests of their obligations during the event.

Lighting

Depending on the type of event you are organizing, chances are you will need to hire some extra lighting.  Night time events will obviously require assistance with illumination, whether they are inside our out, and even some daytime events will also require extra rigs.  You can usually hire sufficient lighting fixtures from a lighting specialist who will be able to advise you on what you need.  Don’t leave your guests in the dark – light up your stages, vendor stalls, turnstiles, and exits with easy to use, portable lighting rigs.

Seating Plan

If you are holding a sporting event, your stands will be plenty good enough to accommodate your audience.  If you are looking at a more formal event, you will need to not only ensure that you have enough seating, but that you often have a comprehensive seating plan in place.

Weddings especially, call for well planned and carefully thought out seating arrangements prior to the event.   With a little forward planning, you can ensure that everyone enjoys your event, wherever they are sitting.

Contingency planning

Some events are dependent on external influences.  Outdoor events, for example, are entirely beholden to the weather conditions on the day.  If you are in an area that is subject to variable weather, make sure you go ahead and plan for some kind of protection from rain or winds.  Portable outdoor structures can easily be hired from local companies including gazebos and marquees and will offer you and your guests protection from the elements.

LED Lighting Vs Conventional Lighting

Advances in lighting technology mean that there are more interior and exterior lighting options available in than ever before.  While many of us still use traditional lights, the switch over to LED lighting in both residential and commercial settings is gaining momentum.

Initially LED light sources were expensive and considered a phase, but as prices have leveled and the benefits of LED lighting are becoming better appreciated, the tide is slowly turning away from traditional light sources.

As a specialist provider of lighting solutions to some of the best-known names in American television, we really know our stuff when it comes to light sources.  If you are thinking about changing any of your existing lights to LED lights, here are some things you should consider.

COST

Pro’s – LEDs may be more expensive to purchase initially, but they will last far longer than other types of light.  In fact, some LED light bulbs can offer a lifespan of as long 60,000+ hours, compared to only 1,000 hours with incandescent or fluorescent bulbs.

Con’s – They are definitely more expensive the purchase from the outset.  If you have to replace a lot of bulbs all at once, you may not be willing or able to pay large sums purely for light bulbs.

EFFICIENCY

Pro’s – LEDs are probably the most efficient type of lighting on the market today.  Typical source efficiency ranges between 37 and 120 lumens/watt, whereas most values for LED system efficiency fall above 50 lumens/watt.

Con’s – You may need very bright illumination that would be better served using traditional bulbs, in which case LED may not produce the amount of light you require.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS

Pro’s – LED lights contain virtually no toxic chemicals and are free from mercury.  This makes them incredibly environmentally friendly and 100% recyclable.  Using LED lights can help to reduce your carbon footprint by up to a third.

Con’s –  Cool white LED lights emit much more blue light than conventional light sources, especially in outside lighting.  This means that they can cause far more light pollution than other sources like traditional high-pressure sodium lamps.  It is therefore important that LED lights are well shielded when used outdoors.

DURABLE QUALITY

Pro’s – Because LED lights do not contain moving parts, they are far more durable and better suited to outdoor, or hard to reach environments.  They can take a fair bit of banging about before they fail.

Con’s – If you are looking to use lighting outside, be aware that LED performance largely depends on the ambient temperature of the operating environment. Too hot or too cold and the unit may fail.

LIGHT QUALITY

Pro’s – LED lights produce a pretty good spectrum of lights and are available in a wide variety of colors, making them a good choice for many domestic and commercial applications.

Con’s – If you are looking for professional grade lighting, with a particular requirement for high-quality rendering, LED lights can render badly using cool-white LED’s.

Overall, the move towards LED lighting is gaining momentum, with many users beginning to see the value in paying more for bulbs, that will effectively last longer and save them money over time.
